Indie Showcase: Java 4k Competition 2009

Written by renxue on March 05, 2009 14:55

Welcome to the Indie Showcase, a semi-regular column on Big Download that takes a look at games we haven't covered on the site that we really think you should play. You may be wondering why Indie Showcase is on Wednesday instead of Tuesday this week. That's because there are so many excellent entries in the Java4k 2009 competition that we needed an extra day to cover them all! For those that are unfamiliar, the Java 4k competition tasks a developer with creating a game with Java whose code and assets total to 4kb or less. It's quite a challenge, but some excellent games have come from it, including previously featured Left 4k Dead. So let's take a look at four of these awesome games and see just how much great gameplay is contained in the 4k competition. Remember that you can check out all of the competitors (including my favorite game from the competitions, Fuzetsu) from the 2009 competition as well as previous competitions on the official organization web page. Also, as this is Java4k, you will need Java installed. Big surprise there!

Big Ideas: A Brief History of Violent Games

Written by renxue on March 05, 2009 14:54

Despite this article's provocative title, this won't exactly be a history of violent video games; more like a random sampling. While obviously not all games have violence in them, many of the more popular ones do. What's more, they're often inextraicably linked to the gameplay. What would Call of Duty 4 be without the combat? Could we still enjoy World of Warcraft without its serious medieval action? Would Dead Space be the same without the ability to sever freaky monster limbs? However, there are different levels of what's acceptable for violence. To my mind, one of the roles of violence in video games is to provide catharsis -- a sort of pressure valve to release all manner of negative emotions in a safe, controlled manner. I can't honestly think of any game that displayed violent acts that were too extreme for me to handle, but as our taste in content develops and matures, we might start to see a corresponding change in what we witness -- and commit -- in our video games. Let's take a look at some notable moments in video game violence over the years, and see if we can guess where we might be going.

Top 5 selling games in 2008 across global markets

Written by renxue on February 04, 2009 16:38

NPD, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain have combined video game software sales lists for the respective regions they cover to declare Mario Kart Wii as the top selling game of 2008. Games sales across the "world's three largest games markets" saw an 11% increase, totaling 409.9 million units last year. While there are many SWG Credits guides out there that tell "the best ways" to acquire SWG Credits, the last thing you probably need - if you're reading this article - is someone telling you where to go to Buy Star Wars Galaxies Credits, or where the cheapest SWG Credits is found. What you need to know is: how do people get this SWG Credits in the first place?

Wiikly Wares: LONPOS, Snowboard Riot, and Sonic Chaos

Written by renxue on February 04, 2009 16:37

It's a full week on WiiWare and the Virtual Console for Wii owners. We've got two new WiiWare games, but, sadly, only one Virtual Console game. Looks like that streak Nintendo's been on for a while now will continue. Oh well, onto this week's releases: Making Star Wars Galaxies Credits isn't really all that difficult - it just takes persistence. There are hundreds of ways to Buy Star Wars Galaxies Credits, instead of buying SWG Credits on eBay or some other sketchy method. In fact, if you're caught exchanging real money for online items or SWG Credits, your account can literally get banned from the servers. And then where would you be? Try a few of these simple methods to earn your own SWG Credits, and you'll never have to consider forking over your hard-earned cash for someone else's Star Wars Galaxies Credits sale. Choose a gathering profession from the start: this way, you can start to make SWG Credits right away by gathering materials from dead animals or plants, and selling them off. Only sell your materials for a profit! It may seem like a no-brainer, but some people in their eagerness for acquiring SWG Credits will do anything to just make their sacks a little lighter. Be smart, don't take the first offer that comes along.

Supersonic Wii: Classic music game revived through homebrew

Written by renxue on February 04, 2009 16:36

We miss Harmonix's pre-Guitar Hero games FreQuency and Amplitude. Well, we don't miss them -- we've got them right here on the shelf -- but we're sad that Harmonix's plastic-instrument games got so ridiculously popular and the company left its more complex, musically varied series behind. These three things will take time to accomplish, but if you're patient from the start, once you reach level 60 you'll be flying high with a nice handful of cash, and have some serious crafting and trading skills that will help you to keep raking in the Star Wars Galaxies Credits. The problem is that most people want Star Wars Galaxies Credits and they want it now - that's just not realistic. Take your time from the start, make smart investments, and before you know it, you'll have more SWG Credits than you know what to do with! Aaron Lindsay and Kevin Dodge, rather than just writing wistful blog posts about the defunct series, have created a homebrew "tribute" to Amplitude on the Wii. Supersonic Wii: Winter Edition, submitted to the Drunkencoders Winter Compo, is a pretty accurate imitation of Amplitude, right down to the typeface. In Supersonic, as in Amplitude, various instruments in a song correspond to "tracks" on the game field, and players must complete measures on each track, quickly jumping from track to track to maintain combos.
